Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence is an extremely serious charge.  Women who suffer from battered women’s syndrome may stay with a spouse or partner who continues to beat them repetitively.  It is imperative that women break the cycle of domestic violence and take steps to protect themselves and their children.  One of the most important steps a woman can take to become free of domestic violence is to hire an attorney who understands that domestic violence is more than an act of physical abuse, but an act of emotional and psychological abuse as well.

All states have laws that protect women from domestic violence.  Domestic violence may best be described as any physical behavior or violent actions taken against a partner, spouse, or even a family member.  This behavior may include pinching, hitting, kicking, punching, biting, shoving, pulling hair, slapping, and pushing.  Another common type of domestic violence includes forced sexual advances or acts.  Even if a couple is married, and a spouse makes unwanted sexual advances towards their partner, a charge of domestic violence may ensue.

Like physical abuse, there are many psychological and verbal actions that are just as damaging and constitute domestic violence.  This may include continually insulting a person, name calling, controlling the finances, limiting a person’s contact with outside resources, other people, or verbal abuse through the use of swearing.  Another common form of domestic abuse may be through the use of fear and intimidation.  If one partner continually intimidates or threatens to physically hurt the other person, the victim may choose to file domestic abuse charges.

Though it isn’t often talked about in our society, men are also the victims of domestic violence.  Men may need to undergo counseling to help break the cycle of domestic violence.  Though it may be hard to admit, men should realize that many women kill men, just as men kill women.  If a man or woman is in a domestic violent relationship, they need to contact an attorney immediately and get help.
