Identity Theft

We live in a digital world, and today it is easier than ever before to steal someone’s identity.  Identity theft occurs when someone obtains another person’s personal information and then begins conducting fraudulent transactions under that name.  This may include taking a person’s social security number, birth certificate, atm, debit, and credit cards, using their savings and checking account, and conducting basic transactions under false pretenses.

When someone is guilty of identity theft, they may begin breaking other laws as well.  They may also be charged with fraud and additional crimes.  If you have been charged with committing identity theft, it is imperative that you seek the advice of an experienced criminal defense attorney.

It is important to protect your personal identification at all times.  This includes guarding your purse and wallet and immediately reporting these items if they are stolen or lost.  You should also safely guard your ATM, Debit Card, and Credit Cards as well.  You should never write your pin numbers on these cards.  Also, when you are using your debit or credit card for a financial transaction, you should always protect or shield your pin number from being viewed.  Sometimes people who are planning on stealing your identity will use cell phone cameras or binoculars to obtain your card and pin number.  Always look over your shoulder and make sure no one is behind you when you complete these transactions.

It is also a good idea to make sure that you always have your mail forwarded to your new residence if you move.  Identity thieves can gather your mail and learn plenty about you.  By harvesting your mail, they can then begin tracking your information online and soon they will assume your identity.  There are state and federal laws in place to protect people from identity thieves.  If you are the victim of identity theft, contact your local police, the Federal Trade Commission, and your credit agencies.
