Telemarketing Fraud

Telemarketing is the act of marketing or selling goods by means of telecommunications, most commonly the telephone.  Since this type of sales involves public telephone waves, both federal and state laws govern the process.  There are a number of telemarketing schemes that target unsuspecting victims and more commonly, seniors.  There are numerous types of telemarketing frauds that are used to capture credit card and other personal information as well as manipulate people into buying unnecessary items for prices that were never disclosed during the telemarketing sales pitch.

Telemarketing fraud and scams are very common and may begin with a person receiving telephone calls at all times of the night.  First, there are laws that all telemarketers must follow regarding reasonable times that they are allowed to call people at.  If you are receiving telemarketing calls and would rather not be called, you can tell them to remove your phone number from their list, and by law, they have to.  You can also put your name on the national Do Not Call List, in an attempt to have telemarketers stop calling you.

One of the most common telemarketing schemes is to call citizens and tell them that they have won sweepstakes or a contest.  Usually the consumer has never entered the contest or even heard of it.  If they stay on the phone very long, they will soon hear a sales pitch enticing them to purchase hotel tickets, vacation packages or even magazine subscriptions.  Sometimes the scam entails having the consumer call either an 800 or 900 telephone number.  The phone call is not free and the telemarketing company makes money for keeping the consumer on the phone. It’s important to understand that if you win a contest or a sweepstakes, you will never have to make a purchase to obtain your winnings.  If you believe that you have been the victim of telemarketing fraud you should contact the Better Business Bureau as well as the Federal Trade Commission.
